Hakalau Valley

Mauna Kea volcano is in the erosion and capping stages. This flank of the volcano receives 200-250 inches (500-630 cm) of rain per year and is dissected by numerous streams and gulches. Hakalau stream valley is a good example. In contrast, Mauna Loa and Kilauea, both in the shield-building stage, erupt frequently and have such youthful surfaces that drainage systems have not developed.
