Puu Mahana

Puu Mahana is a tuff ring built on a primary vent. The cone is roughly 28,000 years old and has subsided 220 feet (67 m) (twice its present height) since it formed. The Green Sand Beach is the result of erosion of the ash from the cone and concentration of olivine crystals by wave action.

West of South Point Road highway 11 crosses the southwest rift zone of Mauna Loa volcano.
