Several hazards arise from the basic nature of lava flows. On Hawaiian
volcanoes, there are two types of flows, 'a'a and pahoehoe. Both types have the
same chemical composition but pahoehoe is much hotter and more fluid when it
erupts. The molten lava has searing temperatures and the volcano releases
smelly, unhealthy gasses.
