For many, walking up to an active lava flow is a memorable,
once-in-a-lifetime experience. Unlike many other volcanic eruptions, the
on-going eruption of Kilauea is easily accessible and relatively non-violent.
Still, there are hazards associated with the active lava flows. These
hazards are not always apparent. Some hazards are from
the lava flows themselves, while others arise from the flows' interaction with
the environment. An appreciation of these hazards and a few simple precautions
against them will help to ensure a safe and enjoyable time.
