Pahoehoe lava has either a smooth, glassy surface or a distinctive, ropy texture. Actively moving pahoehoe flows are typically less than 1m thick and can be approached with relative safety. These flows are covered with a skin of volcanic glass, which is razor sharp and comparable to the shards of a broken window pane. These flows appear nice and smooth but are very unpleasant to fall on.
