Most visitors to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park stay in the Kona district on the sunny west-side of the island. The drive to the park requires about two hours (without stops) by either the south route (on highway 11) or the north route (on highways 19 and 11). Casual observations from the highways reveal much about the nature of Hawaiian volcanoes. The following section provides a basic overview of the geology of the island and what you might expect to see if you come for a visit. The narrative starts in the town of Kailua (in the district of Kona) and circles the island clockwise (with a few optional side-trips). Alternative, click on any of the highway numbers on the map to reach that area.
