Crater Elegante

Crater Elegante is a 1.6 kilometer diameter depression outwardly resembling a maar volcano, rising only about 50 meters above the surrounding desert. It consists of flows and pyroclastics of alkali basalt or hawaiite. Carbon-14 dating from deposits from a lake formed after a collapse puts a minimum age for the small caldera at about 12,000 to 17,000 years. It reaches a depth of 244 meters. It is estimated that the volume of material ejected during the culminating eruptions was at least 162,200,000 cubic meters!
