For the last 25 years I have heard the tale of these forbidden lovers. My
grandmother said it like this: Many moons ago lived a beautiful princess
named Iztacihuatl who was the shine in her fathers eyes, fell in love
with the handsome and daring young man Popocatepetl. Her fathers most
trusted warrior. The emperor was so disappointed in both, decided to send
Popo on a secret mission against the rival tribe, unknowingly was to be
killed by a companion warrior. Luckily Popo realized the true mission and
escaped unharmed. By that time Izta was told he had fallen to his death,
and was being pressured to marry another to save the tribe from further
bloodshed. The night before she was to wed, Popo arrived to take her
away, as she fell in his arms she knew her life w/ the tribe was over and
had to give herself to Popo completely. That night they professed their
love to one another and agreed to flee. As Popo left her alone in his
tent to arrange for their trip, the emperor was finding out that Popo was
back and hiding deep in the woods. He sent his warriors to end his life
once and for all. To the emperors dismay, he had sent his own daughter,
his love to be killed as she slept awaiting her Popo. When Popo came back
to the tent and realized what had happened, Carried his only love to the
top of the mountain and professed to the Gods above that one day he will
take vengence against those who viciously ended their dream.
Their love does live on.
