Popo (popular nickname) and Ixta (also an abbriviation of full name) the mountain range which is connected to Popo are believed to be the "gods" remeberance of two Indains who were starcrossed lovers. Popo was a brave from an Indain tribe that was not friendly to Ixta's tribe. The two lovers decided to run away together since both tribes had forbiden their, lets say marriage for the lack of a better word. They ran to the mountains where they sought refuge in a cave. However a strong cold set in and they didn't leave the cave either for being trapped by the weather or for fear of what their tribes would do to them if they went home. They faced the fact that they were going to die. Ixta fell asleep lying in the horizontal position, while Popo, sat crosslegged at her feet with a sarape, or a blanket wrapped around his shoulders. While they sleept the weather got worse yet and the froze to death. Now Popo and Ixta (the mountains) are a symbol that the two souls of the young lovers are together forever.
I grew up about thirty Miles away in the city of Puebla, and this is the most common story you will hear when you ask for the History of the Volcanoe and "The Speeping Lady"
