JenTemperature affects the viscosity of magma. If you have high temperatures then you have low-viscosity magma, and gas bubbles tend to float up through magma to escape rather than collect. If, on the other hand, you have viscous magma then the gas bubbles can't rise through and they just build up pressure. Eventually the pressure is so great that you have an explosive eruption.
Sincerely,
Scott Rowland
