Do any volcanoes erupt in regular cycles eg every 10 years? Are there any dormant volcanoes in Australia, and if so, when are they likely to erupt?

rocky Frances Underwood (11 years)

Hi Frances,

I don't know of any volcanoes that erupt on such a regular cycle. There are some volcanoes that are always erupting so that if you checked back every 10 years you would see it erupting and think it was on a regular cycle. Some examples of these constantly-erupting volcanoes are Kilauea, Erta Ale, Merapi, and Masaya.

The youngest volcanoes in Australia are a few thousand years old and are in Queensland, and one of them is called Undara. They are strange volcanoes and each consists of a small vent with a very long lava flow leading from it. There are similar volcanoes down at Red Rock, Mt. Napier, Mt. Schank, and Mt Gambier. Maybe there will be similar eruptions like these in the future, but for now I don't think anyone is predicting one soon.

Keep tuned to the news though.

Sincerely,

Scott Rowland, University of Hawaii
