I have learned that a dome is a mountain or hill with magma underneath
it. Could you tell me a recent name and location of such a dome?
One that has never erupted?
Jennifer
Hi Jennifer,
In volcanologic terms, a dome is a very pasty blob of lava that slowly oozes out
of a vent. Sometimes it barely flows at all away from the vent. It is the
ultra-viscous equivalent of a lava flow. Two of the most recent active domes
are those at Mt. Saint Helens and Pinatubo.
If the dome is growing underground it is called a crypto-dome. A crypto-dome
formed at a volcano called Usu in Japan.
I hope this helps to answer your question.
Sincerely,
Scott Rowland, University of Hawaii
