How many volcanoes erupt a year?

rocky Donna Lord

Dear Donna,

The Smithsonian Institution Scientific Event Alert Network (SEAN) reported 376 eruptions from 1975-1985. So, on average, about 35-40 volcanoes erupt per year. Some of these, like Kilauea, Erta Ale, and Sakurajima, are continuously erupting. Other are new eruptions of active volcanoes. And some are eruptions at new volcanoes.
