How did the volcanoes get their name?

rocky Scott

Dear Scott,

Some volcanoes are named by the native people of the area. The names might be based on how the volcano behaves. For example, the name Kilauea means spewing in Hawaiian. As explorers discovered volcanoes they assigned western names. For example, Loo-Wit Lat-kla was renamed Mount St. Helens by George Vancouver in 1792.
