Hi. This is Char from Colorado, USA. About the ring of fire, so all volcanoes in Japan, New Zealand and the Cascade Navada region in California, USA are included in the ring ? What about volcano Cerro Prieto (just south of the north west border of Mexico and USA, north of Gulf of California) in Mexico (I think it is in the Mexicali area), volcanoes Santa Ana and Izoca (I think, just south of Santa Ana) of El Salvador and El Tatio of Chile ?

Dear Char,

The volcanoes in Japan, New Zealand, El Salvador and Chile are all part of the ring of fire. The ring of fire is a ring of volcanoes that result from subduction of oceanic plates beneath lighter plates, plates with continental crust. Volcanoes in northern California, like Lassen and Shasta, are part of the ring of fire. Volcanoes in southern California are related to upwelling in the mantle and a divergent (spreading) plate boundary in the Gulf of California.

Thanks for your question.
