How long ago can a volcano have erupted, and still be considered active? Is Vesuvius an active volcano?

Dear Alan,

Active implies that a volcano has erupted in historical time. So the historic (written) record goes back a couple of thousand years in the Mediterranean region and a couple of centuries in Hawaii.

Vesuvius is an active volcano. Have a look at question 7 in Volcanoes of Other Regions (6. Europe) in Ask a Volcanologist.
