Hi. We are from Mr. Downes class in Reading MA. We want to know when you were first interested in volcanoes. Did you do anything in your childhood that might have indicated you were interested in volcanoes? Thanks

rocky Katherine and Kayla,

Dear Katherine and Kayla,

When I was 15 years old I went on a trip to Yellowstone National Park with my older brother. I was amazed at the size of the caldera and the amount of rising steam. It was obvious that Yellowstone volcanoes are very powerful and that magma was not to far away.
I grew up in Indiana (GO IU!). Volcanoes were far away but I was always curious about science and wanted to learn more. In college I started studying astronomy and then changed to geology. Later I specialized in volcanology.
