How far apart are the two sides of the rim in the photo located at: URL: http://volcano.und.edu/vwdocs/msh/gifs/5784.gif I believe it was taken on May 19, 1982. I am interested in doing some measurements on the photo.

Dear Mark,

The only way I can find the distance between the two sides of the rim is to measure it on a topo map. Since you want to make measurements (presumably of the small eruption cloud), I would think you would prefer to determine the picture scale yourself! But, to give you some help, I measured a distance of 2.0 +/- 0.1 km on the map given in the back of USGS Professional Paper 1250: The May 18, 1980 Eruption of Mt. St. Helens, Washington. Good luck on your project!
