In the past, the earth's volcanic activity was much more active, why has it decreased in destructional power today?

When you say "past" you must be meaning way way back in the past, such as a few billion years ago. As far as human history is concerned the level of volcanic activity has been constant. ONe reason why activity was greater way back a few billion years ago is that the heat sources (cooling of the Earth and radioactivity) were more active back then.
