What causes a volcano to erupt?

Hi MBRICK,

The Earth is hot inside and, as you know, hot things try to cool downc . . . . and so is the Earth. One of the principal ways that the Earth releases heat is through volcanic eruptions, mostly along the Mid-Ocean Ridge. Hot, molten rock rises towards the surface. If it finds an opening (by cracking the solid crust) the molten rock has a chance to make it to the surface, . . . and a volcano erupts.
