Can you compare Mt Pinatubo and Soufriere Hills? Can that comparision help > in predicting the date of a major eruption?

rocky Jennifer

Hi Jennifer,

Well, I guess you could compare the two volcanoes. They're both associated with subduction zones and they both erupt rather infrequently. Pinatubo went from no unrest to big eruption in only a few months. On the other hand, Soufriere Hills has been very gradually picking up the intensity of its activity. Whether that will lead to a Pinatubo-sized eruption or not is uncertain but probably unlikely. There isn't evidence that Soufriere Hills has ever had any really huge eruptions.

Sincerely,
Scott Rowland
