There is an active underwater volcano in the Caribbean called "kick 'em jenny" between the islands of Grenada and St. Vincent. Have you heard of it before? If so, what dangers does it pose to the other islands? Is a tsunami likely to result should it erupt?

rocky Heather and Eddie

Hi Heather and Eddie,

I have heard of Kick 'em Jenny - it is one of the more active submarine volcanoes there is. I don't think it really poses much of a problem to any of the nearby islands. It has erupted numerous times without generating tsunami so based on that pattern it probably isn't a big hazard. Of course that doesn't mean that it will never be a risk, and it would certainly be bad news if a ship happened to be right over it during an eruption. That is exactly what happened back in 1952 when the Japanese research ship the Kaiyo-maru was sunk by an explosion from the undersea volcano Myojin-sho. 31 crew and science staff (all hands) were lost.

Sincerely,
Scott Rowland
