Is there any way to measure volcanoes? If so what is it?

I'm a bit confused. It is easy to measure the size of volcanoes. Volcanologists can measure changes before volcanoes erupt (http://volcano.und.edu/vwdocs/vwlessons/monitors.html). Can you be more specific?
