is a volcano ever truely extinct. if an area is geological unstable then is it not a weak point in the earths crust. this is for a college research paper and i need a answer as soon as humanly possible. plus i find the comment about the lack of jobs in the geology field disappointing since that is what i am studing to be.

Hi Cheryl,

Yes, a volcano can become extinct and never erupt again. If it's source of magma is exhausted or is no longer hot enough to melt the rocks, volcanicm will stop. Yes, volcanism may return to the same place someday because of a change in tectonic (and use the weak places in the crust) but new volcanoes will form, not the old ones restarting. Sorry about the job market. Look at the recent issue of Eos. Most of all work/study hard and get as much experience as you can. See if your school can help you get summer employment/experience. Consider exploartion geology/mining. Applied geology is in vogue. Good luck.

Sincerely,
Steve Mattox
