Where are the zones of high volcanic activity?

rocky Brian Lindquist

Dear Brian,

Most volcanoes are located above subduction zones, places where ocean plates are pushed beneath the edges of other plates. Because the rim of the Pacific Ocean is nearly surrounded by volcanoes and subduction zone it is often called the "Ring of Fire." For a simple map showing the global distribution of volcanoes visit "Location of Plate Boundaries" in the background information on Plate Tectonics.
