Do hot spots in the earth's mantle ever burn out?
Jill Bruce
Hi Jill,
That's a good question. I was going to say the ninetyeast ridge is an
example but according to Dr. John Sinton, it is associated with the Herd
Island hotspot, which is still going. Dr. Sinton did give me a couple of
examples of Cretaceous hotspot traces that are no longer active. One
formed the Musicians seamounts which are north and east of the Hawaiian
Islands. The other is the hotspot associated with the Caroline islands,
which stretch from Kosrae to Belau just above the equator in the W Pacific.
Sincerely,
Scott Rowland
