Is it exciting to study volcanoes?

rocky Scott

Dear Scott,

Yes, in a couple of different ways. In 1986, I went to Chile to help study a volcano. It was a very exciting time. The volcano was very remote, high, and beautiful. From 1988 to 1995 I lived in hawaii most of the time. I was fortunate to help the scientists of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory monitor the eruption of Kilauea. Everyday I would learn something new. In 1992, I finished a project on the geochemistry of volcanic rocks in Utah. The field work was fun but they were old dead volcanoes. The lab work was long (years) and at times tedious. But eventually I learned things about those volcanoes that no one knew before. That was exciting too.
