Dallas and DarleenHi Dallas and Darleen,
I WISH I had a daily update of Kilauea to put on the internet. There isn't one available from the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, mainly because they don't have time to write them. Volcano Watch really is a great resource to have, especially compared to what was available before Dave Clague started writing it a few years ago. Hopefully Maggie Mangan, Dave's successor (temporarily, at least) will continue the fine publication that Dave started.
When there is a crisis, and someone has time, they try to send out eruption updates as often as they can, but more often than not they are so busy that they can't do that. The staff up at HVO has been reduced very drastically by federal budget cuts so they're having trouble just keeping eachother informed of all the things that are going on. They do a very good job under the stressful conditions. It is bad enough having a job that deals with something as uncertain as a volcano, but when you have to be uncertain of whether you'll even have the job at all...
One thing that you can do would be to call the National Park Service's eruption hotline. It's a recording and it is in the phone book. It doesn't have many details but you can figure out whether or not the eruption is doing its usual thing or something more unusual.
Sorry I can't answer your request. I'll let you in on a sort-of secret though--check VolcanoWorld again in a couple of months and you may SEE an update even more often than daily (hint hint)...
Sincerely,
Scott Rowland
