Kilauea has an elevation above sea level of 1222 meters, but since its base is actually below sea level, it is taller than that. However, it is difficult to know exactly where that base is. Kilauea has grown on the flank of Mauna Loa, and it is very difficult to define an exact boundary between the two on land, let alone down below sea level. Above sea level Kilauea has an area of about 1500 square kilometers according to Robin Holcomb of the US Geological Survey.
