Is Hawaii an extinct volcano?

rocky Joan Arndt

Dear Joan,

The state of Hawaii is made of several islands. Each island is made of one to five volcanoes. Active volcanoes are found on the Island of Hawaii and on Maui. Mauna Kea on the Island of Hawaii is a dormant volcano. All of the other volcanoes in Hawaii are probably extinct. I say probably because some Hawaiian volcanoes have gone hundreds of thousands of years between eruptions late in their evolution.
