Will the "hot spot" under the Big Island remain and for how long?

rocky DNice82

Dear DNice82,

We certainly don't know how long it will last. About all geologists know is that the oldest volcano associated with the Hawaiian hotspot is about 70 million years old. That volcano is Meiji Seamount, about to be subducted under Kamchatka. There may have been older volcanoes that are already subducted. We do know that the Hawaiian hotspot hasn't moved in all that time.

Sincerely,
Scott Rowland
