Hello, I am studying Mauna Loa volcano and I was wondering if you could reccommend any materials and readings that would give me a better idea of the general geological features and rock types, and also potential for future impact on the area. Any information that you could send would be very appretiated. Thank you.

Hi Simon,

There are a number of relatively recent publications about Mauna Loa that you can look up. One is an article by Jack Lockwood and Peter Lipman about the past 10,000 years of activity on Mauna Loa. It is chapter 18 in U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper #1350, which hopefully is in your library (perhaps in the Govt. Documents section if not in the geology section). A source of information regarding hazards is a recent hazards map for the whole big island by Tom Wright, Jon Chun, Joan Esposo, Christina Heliker, Jon Hodge, Jack Lockwood, and Susan Vogt. Its title is "Map showing lava-flow hazard zones, island of Hawaii". It is USGS Miscellaneous field studkes map #2193, and may also be in the Govt.Documents section. Finally, Walther Barnard of the State University of New York has compiled a huge collection of just about every article ever written about Mauna Loa. It is a 3-volume set called the "Mauna Loa sourcebook". If it is not in your library you might contact the author directly:

Walther M. Barnard

Hopefully these will be a good starting place for your project.

Sincerely,

Scott Rowland
