Steam explosions began on march 27. The first magmatic eruption was the catastrophic eruption of May 18. That eruption was triggered by a collapse of the north slope of the volcano. Later explosive eruptions occurred on June 12, July 25, and August 7. Dome building eruptions began in October 1980 and ended in 1986.
