What is the current status of Mt. St. Helens? What are the chances it will erupt again soon?

rocky Jim

Hi Jim,

I think the best place to look for this answer is either in the "fire and life" section of VolcanoWorld, or on the Cascades Volcano Observatory home page. All I know is that Mt. St. Helens has a lava dome that is still warm and steaming a little but that it hasn't had an explosion for a number of years.

Of course the volcano itself is not dead by any means. The eruption prior to the famous 1980 eruption took place in the late 1800's. Certainly within the next 50-100 years we can expect another eruption, perhaps another big one.

Sincerely,

Scott Rowland, University of Hawaii
