Video of Mount St. Helens

rockyMr. Reynolds

Mr. Reynolds,

Massive amounts of video were shot before, during and after the various eruptions of Mount St. Helens in 1980. Unfortunately, no one had a video camera on and running when the May 18 blast occurred, and the only motion effect available is that achieved by viewing the 35mm film shot by Gary Rosenquist. These are single frame photos shot rapidly during the avalanche and blast and have been digitized to give a "motion" effect.
A German video production crew did a documentary on the mountain in approx. 1988. Most local television stations in Portland, Oregon and Seattle, Washington have produced documentaries. One film crew was arrested after illegally entering the blast area only days after the largest eruption. They had to be rescued by helicopter and were badly burned. We have copies of many of these in our video library here at ESD 112.
If you are interested I will send you a list of our titles (with publishers) if you give us an address.
We have tried to put video clips on the web, but no one will give us permision as of yet. Seems they are not comfortable with giving away their images!
I hope this has helped. Regards,
