How do you get necessary information about a current eruption, if the homepage is overloaded or turned off because of the number of requests? I'm assuming this is the scenario because presently the CVO is turned off, while Mount St. Helens has been active lately.

Dear Reader,

You raise some interesting points. It is true that if the computer server is overloaded by requests that access may be denied. I don't know if your assumption about the CVO homepage is valid. We provided similar activity about the gradual increase in seismicity at Mount St. Helens and the significance of this activity. This has been a gradual increase and does not warrant any alarm by local residents. The CVO homepage is turned off because of the government wide shutdown (starting November 14, 1995, all government computers were ordered to be turned off). I'm sure that they are happy you noticed. If activity at a Cascade volcano did increase other sources of information (TV, radio, newspaper) would also be available.
