What is the reason that Ol Donyo Legal volcano exists?

It sets along the Great East Africa Rift Zone . . . . an extension on land of the Mid-Ocean Ridge System. The crust is spreading open at this site and new crust is being formed as eruptions continue. The Mid-Ocean Ridge rises above sea level in only two locales, in East Africa and at Iceland.
