Is there a lava lake again in Niragongos crater? If not, is there actually any lava lake?

rocky Yves Dieplinger

Hi Yves,

The last time the Global Volcanism Network of the Smithsonian reported any lava lake activity at Nyiragongo was August of 1994. At that time the lake seemed to come and go for days at a time. The fact that the lake has not been reported since does not mean that it is gone. It is notoriously hard to get information out of that part of the world, especially now since there are all those poor Rwandan refugees near Goma.

I have forwarded your question to a couple of friends who have contacts there to see if they have heard anything more recent.

I'm afraid I didn't understand your second question.

Sincerely,

Scott Rowland
