I am in the 4th grade. I am doing a project on Mt Kilmanjaro. I
can't seemed to fined alot of information. Could you please tell me some
interesting facts on when it was created, makeup, type, and plate.
Sabrina Lewis
Hi Sabrina,
I am very sorry for taking so long to answer your question. Plus, I don't
have a very good answer. There is a little bit of Kilimanjaro information
in some of the questions that we have already answered. You need to go
back to the Ask-a-volcanologist section and type in Kilimanjaro.
Additionally, I know Dr. Chuck Wood recently answered another Kilimanjaro
question, however, it has not yet been added to the list.
For now, about all I can tell you is that Kilimanjaro is Africa's highest
point with a summit elevation of 5895 m (according to "Volcanoes of the
World" by Tom Simkin and Lee Seibert). In the same book Kilimanjaro is
listed as having erupted since the last ice age (i.e. within the most
recent 10,000 years), however, there are no records of specific eruptions.
Kilimanjaro lies on the eastern arm of the East African rift. This is
where the great continent of Africa is being split apart. Magma from
below is rising and has formed a nice chain of volcanoes that stretches
from Ethiopia and the red sea in the north. The rift splits into two
branches near the Kenya-Ethiopia boarder. The western branch extends down
into Zaire and Wranda, and the eastern branch extends down into northern
Tanzania.
Again I apologize for this taking so long and I hope these few facts will
be useful.
Sincerely,
Scott Rowland
