Cara KleinmeyerHi Cara,
According to "Volcanoes of the World" by Tom Simkin and Lee Seibert, the Krakatau eruption killed more than 36,000. Most (but not all) of these people were killed by tsunami that were generated by the eruption and swept up the shores of nearby islands. In the same book, the say that the tallest volcano is Nevado Ojos del Salado, with a summit at 6887 meters above sea level. Most volcanologists would probably consider whichever volcano they happen to specialize on as the most famous, but if you got them to be serious I think they would probably say Krakatau.
Sincerely,
Scott Rowland
