How many feet wide is the vent of Kowagatake, Japan? What does VEI mean? How hot is the lava that comes out of Kowagatake?

rocky Gordon

Dear Gordon,

Sorry for the delay in answering your question.

I have not seen a measurement for the vent at Komagatake. You might have a look at "Current Eruptions in Japan", the homepage of VRC-ERI, Univ. Tokyo at http://hakone.eri.u-tokyo.ac.jp/vrc/erup/erup.html The Volcanic Explosivity Index is a measure of the size of a volcanic eruption.

The ash at Komagatake is andesite in composition. I have not seen temperature estimates from the current eruption. I guess they will be about 900-950 Celsius.
