Can you tell me general information on volcanoes in Japan? Can you tell me info especially on On-Take,Chokai, and Suwanosejima?

Dear Tim,

Sorry for the delay in answering your question.

The first recorded eruption in Japan was at Aso in 553 AD. The largest historical eruption was at Towada in 915 AD. Japan leads the world with the total number of dated eruptions (1274) and the number of volcanoes (94) with dated eruptions. The eruption of Kikai about 6300 was one of the largest known explosive eruptions. Japan has had more (41) large explosive eruption than any other region on Earth.

On-take is the northeastern summit crater and active vent for Suwanosejima stratovolcano. Suwanosejima had an eruption in about 1600 AD. The first historic eruption was in 1813. Since then the volcano has erupted about 12 times. On-take formed in 1884 and has been the main vent ever since. The current eruption of Suwanosejima has been continuous since 1949. Eruptions consist of mild explosion. Eruptions have caused damage but no fatalities.

Chokai is a stratovolcano on the island of Honshu. It has had about 30 eruptions since 573 AD. The most recent eruption was in 1974 and lasted about two months.
