Dear Claudia,

The island of Krakatau never totally disappeared, even though it suffered its huge eruption back in 1883. It went from a single island to 3 small remnants surrounding the collapsed caldera filled with sea water. Krakatau remained an active volcano, and started erupting again. In 1929 the presently active vent made it above sea level out near the center of the collapsed caldera. It is called "Anak Krakatau" (child of Krakatau). It may eventually fill in the whole caldera, creating once again a single island. That may, in turn, collapse in another catastrophic eruption.
