I have to do a science project, and I had a choice to do a project so I chose the Geology of Mt.Fuji. I went to libraries and look up information but I could hardly find any info-mation so I would like to know if you have all the information you could find on Mt.Fuji, for example how it was formed, how old it is, about how many times it erupted, and others.

Hi Kathy,

Sorry to have taken a while to answer you. I'm afraid I don't know very much about Mt. Fuji. I did answer a similar question a little while ago, and there are 10 previous questions that deal with Mt. Fuji.

Mt. Fuji is a beautiful example of a strato-volcano, and is almost a perfect symmetric cone (at least when viewed from far away). It is mostly basalt, which is a little bit unusual for strato volcanoes. Most strato volcanoes are constructed of andesite or dacite compositions. The fact that it is a strato-volcano means that it is composed of layers of both lava and ash. The fact that it is such a beautiful cone probably indicates that it hasn't recently suffered a big eruption.

"Volcanoes of the World" by Tom Simkin and Lee Seibert lists 63 eruptions of Mt. Fuji since about 9000 years ago. Obviously most of these have been determined by using carbon-14 dating rather than accounts by wittnesses. However, the most recent 22 eruptions are listed as having been recorded by people. The most recent eruption was in 1709 but probably the most famous was in 1707. Since there don't seem to be very many geologic sources of information about this eruption perhaps the best place to start looking would be in books about the history of Japan.

Sorry this has not been a huge source of information.

Sincerely,

Scott Rowland
