Do you have any information on volcanoes in Japan?

rocky Ranbir

Dear Ranbir,

The first document eruption in Japan was at Aso in 553 A.D. The largest eruption in historical time was at Towada in 915. There are 94 volcanoes in Japan with eruptions that have been dated (more than any other region). The volcano Kikai, south of Kyushu, erupted 6,300 years ago, producing one on the largest eruptions in the last 10,000 years. No other region has more large (VEI=4) explosive eruptions.

There is additional information and photos in the Japan section of Volcanoes of the World in VolcanoWorld.
