Is Tarawera still an active volcano?
What's the latest on White Island?
Mark
Dear Mark,
Tarawera was a vent in the Okataina volcanic field. Tarawera erupted in 1180 and 1886. There have been 19 eruptions in the Okataina volcanic field since 1886. Since their has been eruptions in historical time Okataina is considered an active volcanic field and Tarawera an active vent.
Since June 28-29, 1995 there has been no eruptive activity at White Island. A new crater formed in August. For the latest on White Island visit the homepage of the Global Volcanism Network.
