We are two year 3 students from Methodist Ladies College in Kew, Melbourne, Australia. We found your page on the Internet and wanted to ask you a little about volcanos.

At our school we have been learning about volcanos and we are intrested in knowing how volcanos erupt. Do you know how many volcanos there are in Victoria?

rocky Jessica and Emilly

Dear Jessica and Emilly,

Australia is not usually considered to be a country with volcanoes but actually there have been eruptions for many millions of years along its eastern edge. The youngest eruption was only about 2900 years ago in the Newer Volcanic Province of Victoria. According to "Cainozoic Volcanicity in Victoria" by O.P. Singleton and E.B. Joyce (published in 1969 as part of the Special Publication of the Geologic Society of Australia, volume 2, pages 145-154) there are between 350 and 400 cinder cone volcanoes in the New Volcanic Province west of Melbourne. I bet you can find some more recent articles about the Australian volcanoes!
