Do you have a list of extinct volcanoes in Australia....Please...we are
studying Volcanoes and find information difficult to get!
Hi Year 5V,
I contacted Dr. John Stephenson at James Cook University (Queensland), and
this was his reply:
- Greetings !
The questions on Australian volcanoes :
Unfortunately, there is no list of extinct Australian volcanoes.
- In North Queensland, we beleive we have recognised about 300 to
400 but this counts includes all sizes. The volcanoes range fro some
which erupted more recently - 10000 years and older, and most which ar
much older - from around 150000 years, and commonly > 1 million up to 6
million years old. There are many young volcanoes in parts of Victoria,
similar to the young ones indicated in North Queensland.
- The youngest volcano we think is Tower Hill in Victoria which may
be only 6000 to 7000 years.
- There are no comprehensive references to Australian volcanism from
this point of view. The best would be "Intraplate volcanism in Eastern
Australia and New Zealand" ed. W.R. Johnson, publ Cambridge Univ. Press.
Hopefully this will help
Sincerely,
Scott Rowland, University of Hawaii
