What would the environmental affects be if Rangitoto was to erupt?

rocky Jess

Hi Jess,

I would guess that they wouldn't be very great. Rangitoto was not an explosive member of the Auckland monogenetic field. Instead, it had a little bit of fountaining, and lots of rather passive lava flows. When those flows entered the bay they might have affected some sea life, but mosth things could have gotten away. The important thing to think about is that each member of the Auckland monogenetic field only erupted once (although that "once" might have lasted a few years). So, Rangitoto almost certainly won't erupt again. Of course that doesn't mean that a new member of the monogenetic field could't pop up somewhere.

Sincerely,
Scott Rowland
