I'm seeking information or references on the eruptive history of Sangay in Ecuador. Have there been any major eruptions producing deep ash layers more than 100 Km away during the past 3000 years?

rocky James

Hi James,

"Volcanoes of the World" by Tom Simkin and Lee Seibert, only lists 3 eruptions of Sangay, the earliest in 1628 and all of Volcanic Explosivity Index of around 3 (not that big). Almost certainly there have been earlier and bigger eruptions. Perhaps our resident Ecuador expert Dr. Charles Wood will be able to chime in with some more useful information (hint hint, Chuck).

Sincerely,

Scott Rowland
